Students at one Queens school could be bringing home more than assignments, binders and textbooks -- bed bugs may also be stowed away in their backpacks.

The City Department of Education said in a statement Thursday that John Adams High School in Ozone Park is set to be fumigated during the winter break after the blood-sucking critters were discovered.

“We're committed to providing all students with a safe and clean learning environment,” the department said in a statement.

Parents said they found out about the infestation on Tuesday, when students were sent home with letters from the school. It’s not clear how widespread or serious the bed bug infestation at the school is, but students told News 4 that they had heard about the parasitic critters for a week before they were sent home with letters.

Although the bites aren’t dangerous and don’t spread disease, bedbugs can be a real nuisance because of their persistence, so you will want to act fast. First things first, you need to be able to spot the little devils. Adult bedbugs are oval-shaped, up to 5/6mm long and can be dark yellow, red or brown. They are expert hiders though, so you may need to look for clues rather than come across the bugs themselves. Signs you might have an infestation include tiny white eggs in the crevices of your mattress and furniture or blood spots on your sheets from squashing the bugs. You may also find mottled shells that have been shed or tiny black spots on your mattress, which are their dried excrement.

Pest Management in Food Service Facilities

One of the most annoying things that common people and businesses would encounter would probably be the so-called unwanted guests. Especially in the business world, pest management is of great importance, in fact, it should be a priority. There are instances when we think that simple bed bugs killer will be enough to eliminate the problem. Although it can help, but maybe it can only kill bed bugs baby and not really get into the root of the problem. This is why food service facilities employ good pest management with the help of professionals to provide the best for their customers. The article below talks about pest management in food service facilities and how to control these things to make sure that the people are safe and can enjoy their food. Read on to know more about pest management.   Cockroaches are a serious problem in these accounts, but control can be achieved if food, water and harborage are eliminated and customer cooperation is achieved. Pest control in food service facilities can quickly become a struggle between the client and pest management professional if expectations between the two are not spelled out early in the relationship. If both parties are not on the same page as far as duties are concerned, then small issues can and will escalate, resulting in dissatisfied clients. It’s no secret that two of the greatest contributing factors in pest management are sanitation and exclusion; giving pests less food and water to consume, and minimizing the places in which they can enter and hide. That said, overcoming those two issues is much easier said than done. As PMPs, it is in our best interest to work with clients as closely as possible, giving them as much detail and advice as one can afford to give, and knowing where and when sanitation and exclusion issues can turn into problems. The more effort you put into educating your clients on where they can help themselves, the better off both parties will be.

But when they start damaging properties or causing trouble in our places, we begin to realize that we could have actually prevented such thing from happening if we just made the right decisions. But in getting rid of them, we often think that bed bugs spray is enough. More often than not, the problem will still likely persist. The best thing to do is to hire experts to get rid of this problem. The article below is an example of how bed bugs can be of great damage to property and this is why professionals are needed in solving this kind of problem. Read on to know how much damage was caused by bed bugs.   OKLAHOMA CITY —Two cases of bed bugs have been discovered in the last six months at a metro library. Managers at the Metropolitan Library System said bed bugs have appeared inside some of the books at their branch in The Village. The two discoveries in the past six months is above average for the library, and officials are investigating to make sure the bugs don’t show up again.“A lot of times, we find bed bugs or maybe fecal matter of a bed bug,” said Kim Terry, with the Metropolitan Library System. She said the library system has to deal with bed bug problems from time to time. “Any public institution, any public place has probably experienced this at one point,” Terry said. Bed bugs are something Terry said they take seriously. “We’re trying to investigate how two have come in,” she said. “Is it a particular family? Is it a person?” Officials will check every book that is returned to make sure it’s clean before returning it to the shelf. If they find any type of bugs, they will send it to their maintenance facility to be “cooked” in special boxes.

FAIRBANKS — It is the time of year that many of us shake the snow off and head for warmer climes. A tall drink on a warm beach may be just what the doctor ordered when it comes to getting an influx of vitamin D and some much needed sunshine. However, make sure that you don’t head back home with any unwanted pests.

Bed bugs have invaded the swankiest of establishments, and we have to be on our guard. Not only can the hotel cost you cash to stay, but it can also cost you money for medicine and irritation after you get home. Bed bugs live in cracks and crevices and have been surviving on human blood for as long as we can recall.

According to an article, “Bedbugs in the 21st Century: The Reemergence of an Old Foe,” published in the journal Laboratory Medicine, bed bug infestations were decreasing during the 21st century in most of the developed world, but, since the late 1990s, there has been a marked increase in the number of infestations. After the federal ban on certain kinds of insecticides in the 1970s, less-toxic and less-effective insecticides have been used. Additionally, there have been reports that bed bugs have developed a resistance to some insecticides.

Dr Heather Lynch, a lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian University, said she had discovered that residents in Govanhill in Glasgow had chosen to accept the insects after running out of ways to kill them. Writing in The Conversation, which uses information and research backed by academics, Dr Lynch said some residents had taken the view that the best response is to learn to live ‘side-by -side’ with the insects and adapt. She said: "The experience of people in Govanhill, is that once these insects become endemic they are effectively impossible to remove." Dr Lynch said the area reflected the challenges and opportunities of 21st-century Europe. She added: "Govanhill has become renowned in recent years for poor housing, poverty and crime - as well as for artists and vibrant community activists. "And it faces major environmental issues, with constant rubbish dumping and infestations of bed bugs."

This discusses that the belief of many people that alcohol is actually the solution for bed bugs is not right.   Getting bed bugs is a nightmare experience, one that’s sure to cost you oodles of time, money, and emotional distress. The bugs are painfully hard to purge from your household, and it’s getting even harder as they become more resistant to common insecticides. Unfortunately, home remedies are often no match for these parasitic insects. Dousing them with rubbing alcohol (a tip you'll often hear) won’t kill them; in fact, it might just burn your house down, as a woman trying to rid her Cincinnati apartment of bed bugs found out recently. As The Washington Post reported, the alcohol in that case was too close to the flame of a candle or some type of incense, and ignited. It wasn't an isolated incident. In the last 10 years or so, people trying to kill bed bugs with alcohol have started several house fires across the U.S., including a different incident in Cincinnati just two weeks ago. So short of burning down your entire house and starting over, how do you get rid of them? Read on to know why it’s a no-no to pour alcohol on bed bugs.
